Who We Are
Here at Lighthouse Gardens, we take perennial gardening seriously. We are devoted to providing superior perennial plants for your garden at very reasonable prices resulting in unparalleled value for you, our customer. We do this by offering young perennial plants (liners) directly to retail customers. Most gardens centers purchase perennial liners from wholesale greenhouses, transplant them into larger containers, grow them out for several weeks, and then sell them at a substantial profit. We would rather pass the savings on to you.
Why Our Plants Are Superior
We pledge to our customers and our planet that we will use environmentally responsible growing practices and continuously improve upon them, period. We believe that in order to produce superior ornamental plants you don’t have to use synthetic chemicals that pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink. We are the only greenhouse business that we know of that displays our spray records publicly on our website www.lighthouse-gardens.com. We believe in full disclosure of our growing practices so that our customers are better informed as to what they are planting in their own gardens and our industry colleagues can join us in growing plants more responsibly.
We grow our plants “hard.” They are grown in cool temperatures for compact, robust growth and are not overfertilized with synthetic nitrogen which often results in fast, soft growth. We don’t push our plants out of the greenhouse so that we may quickly replace them with another crop. We grow just one tough crop of perennials that will put on an outstanding performance in your garden and ours.
Lighthouse Gardens is not a certified organic farm. However, we do hope to be as soon as possible. Organic seed is all but nonexistent for most perennials, but everything else about our operation is organic. Everything we use in the production of our plants is Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listed. This includes our planting media, fertilizers, and organic pesticides (which we use very sparingly). Our purpose is to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
Going Beyond Organic
At Lighthouse Gardens, we don't use organic growing practices as a marketing scheme to sell our plants. For us, it's a way of life. Many greenhouses will grow organically but shed that philosophy when they leave the greenhouse. I can't count the number of stories I've heard about how growers get around the 'rules'.
Everything we do is truly sustainable. We option to use a passive ventilation system in our greenhouse, using about a tenth of the electricity than a fan vented system would use. The electricity that we do consume comes from 49% wind, 1% solar and 50% low impact hydro. Furthermore, the money we make from our business completes the circle. We buy local organic food whenever possible and grow as much food as our garden space will allow. We also support local small businesses and services with our hard earned money in order to keep it in the local economy for as long as possible.
